ASHAV Futurity Program

Supporting Breeders & Show Horses for the Future

The ASHAV Futurities are held annually as part of the ASHAV Horse Show at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA. These prestigious classes promote American Saddlebred breeding and are open to all breeders who meet the nomination and eligibility requirements.

• Weanling (In-Hand)

• Yearling (In-Hand)

• 2-Year-Old (Under Saddle, Walk-Trot)

Eligibility Overview

🧬 Foal Eligibility

Foals must be offspring of nominated stallions and mares. It is the mare nominator’s responsibility to ensure the stallion is properly nominated.

​

🐎 Sire Nomination

• Stallion must be ASR registered

• $50 fee due by June 30th of the foal’s birth year

​

🐴 Dam Nomination

• Mare must be ASR registered

• $5 fee due by June 30th of the foal’s birth year

​

🍼 Weanling Eligibility

To show as a weanling:

• Both sire & dam must be nominated by June 30th

• $20 nomination fee due by June 30th

• Foal must be ASR registered before post-entry deadline

• If not shown: registration or application due by Dec 31; application must be complete by Feb 28 of yearling year

🐎 Yearling Eligibility

• Horse must have met all weanling requirements

• $25 fee due by June 30th of the yearling year

​

🏇 2-Year-Old Eligibility

• Horse must have met all weanling & yearling requirements

• $30 per division fee due by June 30th of the 2-year-old year

Showing Requirements & Procedures

📍 Location

All futurity classes are held at the ASHAV Horse Show at the Virginia Horse Center, Lexington, VA.

✅ Entry Rules

• Horses must be properly entered

• Registration papers or pending certificate must be presented to show secretary

Weanling & Yearling In-Hand Classes

• Shown at the trot, individually, led in hand

• Judged on conformation

• No lunging or tail sets allowed

​

Allowed/Prohibited Equipment:
✅ Halters or bridles (no curb bits)
✅ Smooth leather straps (pre-show only)
✅ Vertical half-cup blinkers (pre-show only)
❌ Tail sets on weanlings
❌ Blindfolds, chains, shackles, rubber bands

​

2-Year-Old Class (Under Saddle)

• Shown at walk and trot under saddle

• May use a snaffle bridle & martingale

• Both cut and uncut tails permitted

🏆 Prizes & Payouts

🎁 Sire & Dam Purses

• Winning weanling’s sire/dam nominator: $100 each

• Second place: $50 each

​

💰 Division Payouts (Weanling, Yearling, 2-Year-Old)

• 1st – 33%

• 2nd – 25%

• 3rd – 17%

• 4th – 12%

• 5th – 8%

• 6th – 5%

💸 All prize money is paid within 10 business days after show closing to the legal owner.

🗓️ Important Notes

• Deadline: June 15 (USPS postmark accepted)

• If due date falls on Sunday/legal holiday: postmark next day is accepted

• 5-day grace period applies

• USPS postmark supersedes postage meter

⚠️ Liability & Disqualification

• No entry is liable for more than paid fees

• No refunds

• Entries violating rules or using prohibited equipment may be disqualified

• Management reserves the right to reject entries

• ASHAV is not responsible for reminders of payment due
